McDonald's Gets Sued in Food Allergy Cases
Just last week, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that an O'Fallon, Missouri family is suing McDonald's for misleading them about the ingredients in their french fries and hash browns. One of their sons has Celiac's Disease (an intolerance to gluten and wheat products). Their other son is autistic and wheat, gluten and milk aggravate his behavioral problems. Although they have checked McDonald's ingredient list for years and neither casein (a milk derivative) or wheat were listed, it seems that McDonald's fries are made with both these problematic ingredients.
Of course, at support group meetings the question about McDonald's fries has come up many times so it is not surprising to me that a lawsuit has been filed. The lawsuit is being filed along with 16 other injury cases in Florida and a federal class action lawsuit. According to Lebowitz & Mzhen, a personal injury law firm:
My kids know better than to ask me to take them there anyway. "Mommy doesn't go to McDonald's because once we ordered chicken nuggets and they gave us burgers." Well, that's true and it seems like a much easier explanation than I have a problem with how they treat cows, and the little pieces of cr@# toys that end up littering our house and landfills, and that eating nothing but burgers for a month could lead to early angioplasty!

"The FDA mandates that all food producers have to make sure that the food they produce and/or sell is correctly labeled and includes a proper list of nutritional content and ingredients. Any expiration date must be properly listed. All food must not contain any harmful bacteria, toxic substances, or foreign objects inside them."Just when you think it's safe to eat out again (see my September 30 post :)... isn't it disappointing to hear that a big company would be so cavalier about food safety? I mean, is there or is there NOT wheat and milk products in your food?! Is this rocket science? Nooooo... but it is a life and death situation for your customers!
